Often times our journeys seem hopeless; we don’t see an end to the storms of life that we encounter. The storms of life rages so fiercely that we become consumed with the storm. We tend to focus on the darkness of the clouds, the howl of the winds, and the piercing cold of the rain as it falls intensely from the skies. But in the momentary flash of lightning, the moment of light and of hope, God can use the simplest thing to remind us of His love and His hand on our lives, even something as small and insignificant as a penny. We may not be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel; however the beautiful thing is that we don’t have to. This is something that is very true for CCM recording artist Johnny Callicott, who goes by the stage name Johnny C. Very relaxed and approachable, Johnny says he can sum up his journey in one verse, Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the thoughts and the plans I have for you.” Johnny is an individual who, through his life and his music, is able to share the redemptive power and love that is available through God. “With the things I have been through in my life, I shouldn’t be here,” Johnny tells me as we sit talking outside with his brother Jay, enjoying the beautiful Florida weather.
Johnny spent 15 years of his life involved in drugs. He spent a lot of that time in and out of jails, crack houses, and rehab programs. He was lost in the storm that had become his life. There didn’t seem to be any hope for him; he would enter a program and decide that “the program just wasn’t for me.” The catalyst for Johnny didn’t come until his child’s mother was brutally murdered by a serial killer in Daytona Beach and at that point he “woke up” and decided to turn his heart to God. It was shortly after this event that he ended up at “Circle of Love,” a faith based program that helped him to not only get clean, but to hear from God and re-discover his passion for music. What was meant to be a program lasting for only a few months, God used it to reignite his passion and talent for music over the course of a few years. “I started playing the drums every chance I could. They had a piano there and I just started writing music,” Johnny says with excitement and passion in his voice.
Johnny C’s music is something new and sincere and a breath of fresh air! He is an artist that doesn’t sound like everyone else and his music is heartfelt and reflects a person who is thankful. The first single from the album, “Penny Rain,” was birthed from an experience he had at one of the lowest moments of his life. At the time when he was stuck in the drug addiction with no hope, no future, and ready to take his own life, God used a penny to remind him that there is more to life than what he was experiencing; there was hope. A simple penny, “In God We Trust,” spoke to his heart and allowed him to continue to push forward. As you listen to the song, one is able to feel the raw emotion and sincerity of the artist.
As Johnny begins to describe his music, the description is as simple as it is sincere. “It’s all written from true life experiences. Most of the lyrics are true to my heart and it’s real easy to sing from the heart.” And it’s a heart that you can feel in the music and lyrics, letting people know that there is more to what they currently see and feel. Jeremiah 29:11 are just as real for others as it is for Johnny.
Now signed by Sonorous Records, Johnny C has been spending time in the studio recording and preparing for the release of his debut album “Come Alive” early 2014. The first single, “Penny Rain,” is currently trending at #178 on the charts, which is definitely a testimony to the goodness and faithfulness of God. Still with all of the responsibilities of the music career, he refuses to forget the real focus which is to be a witness of hope and of God’s love to a world truly in need. Johnny is excited and full of passion when he talks about his upcoming release and the impact it will have sharing his story with the world; an impact that will truly glorify God’s kingdom. When he is not actively in the studio, Johnny C can be found ministering and sharing his life changing experience in the shelters and rehabs or with his wife helping with their local church.
